eMagin Corp.(Hopewell Junction, NY), makers of OLED-on-silicon virtual imaging display technology, unveiled the first full-color, active-matrix organic-light-emitting diode (OLED) on-silicon microdisplay at the International Display Research conference in Palm Beach, FL. When combined with near-eye optical systems, OLED-on-silicon microdisplays create miniature, virtual images equivalent to the real image of a computer monitor or large-screen TV. This enables access to information-rich text, data, and video, which may facilitate new mass markets for wireless Internet appliances, mobile phones, portable DVD viewers, digital cameras, and wearable PCs.

The microdisplay demonstrates real-time, full-color performance. Says Webster Howard, eMagin's vice president for technology, "This display is a technology demonstrator that confirms the validity of our technical approach to building full-color OLED microdisplays." The full-color microdisplay is built on eMagin's military/medical/industrial-oriented monochrome SXGA (1280 x 1024) pixel IC array, which was demonstrated last May at the Society for Information Display conference. The small-molecule OLED is licensed from Eastman Kodak (Rochester, NY).
