Raytheon wins 2011 Herschel Award for silicon p-i-n detectors

Goleta, CA--In recognition of technological breakthroughs in hybrid visible focal plane arrays (FPAs), Raytheon Vision Systems (RVS) received its fifth Herschel Award since 1987.

Goleta, CA--In recognition of technological breakthroughs in hybrid visible focal plane arrays (FPAs), Raytheon Company's (NYSE: RTN) Raytheon Vision Systems (RVS) has received its fifth Herschel Award since 1987. The award, presented at the 2011 Military Sensing Symposia (MSS) held in Orlando, FL, recognizes the development of state-of-the-art hybrid visible focal-plane-array (FPA) solutions based on silicon p-i-n detector technology. These FPAs have superior performance in quantum efficiency, radiation hardness, and spectral response relative to other more conventional imaging arrays.

"The receipt of the 2011 Herschel Award highlights the importance of our Silicon P-i-N technology and emphasizes our leadership position in high-performance visible detection capabilities," said Mike Prout, RVS general manager. "Raytheon's new Silicon P-i-N focal plane arrays are being utilized in space-based surveillance applications that encompass stringent performance requirements in terms of sensitivity, uniformity and operability."

This is a joint award shared with Teledyne Imaging Sensors.

The Herschel Award is presented at the annual MSS meeting in the years in which the selection committee determines that a significant technological breakthrough has occurred. MSS is a national organization that promotes the development and application of both radar and electro-optic sensor technology, primarily associated with military applications.
