Fusion splicer from Aurora Optics offers splice loss estimation
The MiniMod fusion splicer features full three-axis automatic alignment, automatic fiber placement, sub-pixel image processing, arc fusion control, and splice loss estimation. The splicer survives ambient temperatures from -10° to +55°C, relative humidity from 0–95%, and altitude to 5000 m. Its three-axis fiber alignment delivers typical low insertion loss of 0.02 dB on single-mode fiber, and makes low-loss splices on all standard, polyimide-coated single-mode and multimode fibers from 8.5 to 172 μm.

PRESS RELEASE
MINIATURE MODULAR FUSION SPLICER
February 2011
Aurora Optics has created the world’s smallest fully-automatic fusion splicer. Nicknamed the MiniMod, the new fusion splicer is as small as a digital camera, making it usable in the most difficult and hard-to-reach situations.
The MiniMod fusion splicer is operated from a remote control unit, connected by an umbilical cable. This enables the splicer to off-load functions that do not have to be at the fiber location, such as display monitor, control keypad, microprocessor, and power supply. Only the functions that affect the fibers directly – imaging system, precision fiber positioners, and high voltage fusion arc – are kept in the splicer itself. The result is a device only 23 cubic inches in volume and weighing only one pound, perfect for use even hand-held.
Yet in this tiny package the splicer retains all the most sophisticated fiber alignment and fusion technologies: full three-axis automatic alignment, automatic fiber placement, sub-pixel image processing, sophisticated arc fusion control, and splice loss estimation. No other miniature fusion splicer offers three-axis alignment. The MiniMod works in any orientation, even upside-down, and survives rough handling per MIL-PRF-28800, including ambient temperatures from -10 to +55 C, relative humidity from 0 – 95 %, and altitude to 5000 meters.
The MiniMod’s fully-automatic three-axis fiber alignment delivers consistent low losses, typically 0.02 dB on single mode fiber, compared to the erratic losses often seen in low-end fixed V-groove fusion splicers.
No other fully-automatic fusion splicer comes close to the MiniMod’s ergonomic elegance. Competitive fully-automatic fusion splicers are typically fifteen times larger in volume and ten times heavier.
Using handy fiber holders capable of proof-testing spliced fibers to 500 grams-force, the MiniMod makes low-loss splices on all standard single mode and multi-mode fibers from 8.5/125 µm up to 100/140/172 µm polyimide-coated, typically in just 15 seconds.
Aurora Optics has been creating innovative fiber optic solutions to the most difficult problems since 1986, and always Made in America.
