Global producer of optical components, Edmund Optics (EO), has announced the finalists for its 2012 Higher Education Global Grant Program.

Barrington, NJ -- Global producer of optical components, Edmund Optics (EO), has announced the finalists for its 2012 Higher Education Global Grant Program. The potential grant recipients were chosen from over 750 applications received from candidates representing 53 countries. This year, the Higher Education Global Grant program will be awarding over $80,000 USD in products to the winners plus an additional $5,000 USD awarded to the program that best embodies the legacy of Edmund Optics' founder Norman Edmund. That's 28% more in free products than what was awarded last year.

The 45 hopeful finalists, representing 22 different countries, submitted applications ranging from non-invasive optical systems for cancer detection and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) techniques for macular degeneration to remote laser sensing of insects for malaria detection and optical probing of glacial ice for climatic analysis. Finalists can look forward to joining EO's elite group of grant recipients who continue to accelerate optical innovation.

The difficult task of selecting the winning grant recipients from so many worthy applicants lies ahead for EO's global grant team. After securing more in-depth information about the programs, the Team will select three award recipients for each region, the Americas, Asia, and Europe respectively, based on two criteria: (1) Technical Merit, which is the application of optics in the program, and (2) the Innovative use of optics in a lab or research setting.

The 2012 Higher Education Grant recipients will be announced September 14, 2012. A full list of finalists may be found at www.edmundoptics.com/grant.
