Rugby, England--The GSI Group Laser Division has rebranded as JK Lasers, and will continue under its new name to develop and manufacture Nd:YAG and fiber lasers for industrial applications.
The company, which marked its 40th anniversary earlier this year, started out with a range of pulsed lasers using ruby, YAG, and glass laser rods. They followed with a series of Nd:YAG laser systems for welding, cutting, and drilling.
In 1982, JK Lasers was acquired by Lumonics of Canada; during this time, the company developed and installed the world’s first fiber-optic delivery system on a solid-state laser.
Lumonics then merged with General Scanning Inc. (GSI) in 1999 and, following the sale of the Lumonics brand, the laser segment of the business changed its name to the GSI Group Laser Division. Retaining the same staff and technical expertise, the company launched its first fiber lasers in 2007.
Commenting on the rebranding, Dr. Mark Greenwood, general manager of JK Lasers, notes that the company has experienced strong growth during the first half of this year, with expectation to sustain growth throughout the remainder of 2012.
