TeraXion acquires COGO Optronics and its InP integrated photonics technology

March 6, 2013
TeraXion acquired the Canadian subsidiary of COGO Optronics for its indium phosphide (InP) integrated photonics technology.

Quebec, QC, Canada–Optical component and communications module (http://www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/2011/02/teraxion-dispersion-compensator-supports-low-latency-services-in-dwdm.html) manufacturer TeraXion has acquired the Canadian subsidiary (Ottawa, ON, Canada) of COGO Optronics (Boulder, CO). The acquisition includes the subsidiary and critical intellectual property assets related to indium phosphide (InP) integrated photonics technology (http://www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/2012/11/silicon-photonics-national-action-plan-canada.html) for next-generation high-speed optical communications. Woodside Capital Partners acted as exclusive advisers to this transaction.

"Today's announcement is another milestone in line with our organic and acquisitive growth strategy. The team in Ottawa and California is bringing new and highly complementary expertise to our current capabilities. The InP modulator product line developed over the years at COGO has all the attributes to meet the market’s needs for next-generation 100 Gb/s and above transceiver development", said Alain-Jacques Simard, TeraXion president and CEO. "This additional building block will accelerate the development of our photonic integration products roadmap (http://www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/oiq/2012/02/honeywell-selects-teraxion-gyro-lasers.html) where performance, size and power consumption are key requirements", said Martin Guy, TeraXion VP product management and CTO.

"This combination will better service the needs of our existing customers and accelerate the time to market of the rich products pipeline COGO has been developing in conjunction with leading customers," said COGO’s CEO Alka Swanson. "Combining the advanced InP technology and products developed by COGO with the larger scale and market reach of TeraXion will result in a more stable commercial platform from which the business can be ramped to its full potential," added COGO's CFO Ron Lacey.

TeraXion designs, manufactures, and markets optical components and modules for high-speed fiber-optic transmission networks, fiber lasers, and optical sensing applications. COGO Optronics (http://www.cogooptronics.com) develops, manufactures, and markets technologies for next-generation high-speed optical networks.
