Dakar, Senegal--The African Laser Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Sciences Network (LAM Network), in collaboration with other groups, is organizing the "LAM 10 International Workshop: Optics, Photonics, and Lasers in Science and Technology for Sustainable Development," which will be held at the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar from 13 to 18 January 2014. At the conference, a special session on the launch of the African Optics and Photonics Society will be held.

Other groups on the LAM Network team include the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP; Trieste, Italy), the International Science Programme (ISP) at the University of Uppsala (Uppsala, Sweden), the African Physical Society (AfPS; Accra, Ghana), and the African Laser Centre (ALC; Pretoria, South Africa), as well as universities and governmental authorities in Senegal. Additional support is expected from international optical organizations and from other national or international organizations and governments, says the LAM Network.

Workshop topics
As befits the name of the conference, a number of its workshop topics are tied in with the environment. These include laser and optical sensors in environmental monitoring; remote sensing and imaging; and optics, photonics, energy, and global change. However, many of the topics at the LAM 10 International Workshop are more general, including laser and optical spectroscopic techniques; medical diagnostics and therapy with lasers; multispectral imaging and spectroscopy; photonics and optical technologies; laser sources and techniques in laser-matter interactions; laser and optical technologies in industry; computation and simulation in science and technology; and astronomy and space science.

The scientific meeting will consist of invited and contributed papers, poster sessions, exhibitions, and laboratory demonstrations open to scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from all countries, as well as the session on the launch of the African Optics and Photonics Society. The program will be conducted in English. The LAM Network notes that, while travel and subsistence expenses of the participants should be covered by their home institutions, limited funds are available for participants from African and developing countries.

Participants are encouraged to submit a one-page abstract on the topics of the workshop. Submission of abstracts and requests for financial support must be done by 20 November 2013 and should be sent to: Professor Ahmadou Wagué, Local Organizer, Laboratoire Atomes Lasers, Faculty of Science and Technique University Cheikh Anta Diop Dakar Senegal; emails: [email protected] and [email protected] .
