Southampton, England--Ultrafast fiber laser manufacturer Fianium reported shipment of its 1000th supercontinuum laser on January 14, 2014. Fianium has its world headquarters and manufacturing facility in Southampton and sales operations in the US, Japan, and China and distribution partners in many countries.

Fianium CEO Anatoly Grudinin said of the milestone, "Our first supercontinuum fiber laser had a modest power of 1W and was ordered by Professor Zheludev's group at the University of Southampton in October, 2004. Since then we have increased output power by factor >10 and expanded the output spectrum to 370 nm at short wavelengths and over 2400 nm in the infrared. In my view the developments in supercontinuum fiber lasers is an excellent example of how low cost disruptive technology can migrate from early adopters to volume industrial customers. We are pleased to have reached this 1000th laser milestone. This also emphasizes the important role of close collaboration between leading Universities and laser companies."

Professor Zheludev, a leading authority nanophotonics and metamaterials, added, "In 2004 we recognized the importance of continuum fiber lasers for the study and characterization of nanoscale optoelectronic devices and nanostructured materials. Indeed the high brightness of the Fianium source, that appeared on the market at that time, combined with its remarkably broad emission spectrum and short pulse duration, allowed us to develop several new applications in transient ultrafast spectroscopy, near-field imaging and microscopy. We continue using these Fianium sources in our projects at the Centre for Photonic Metamaterials at the University of Southampton."

Fianium will exhibit its supercontinuum technology at booth #729 at the SPIE BiOS & Photonics West exhibit in San Francisco, CA, February 1-6, 2014.
