SPIE BiOS and SPIE Photonics West 2014 preview: Optics and photonics continue to innovate

This year’s SPIE Photonics West, North America’s leading optics and photonics conference and exhibition, is expected to draw the largest crowd to date, as presenters, exhibitors, and attendees gather to discuss and learn about the latest products, market insights, and technical presentations.

The first part of the event is the SPIE BiOS Expo, a biomedical optics and biophotonics exhibition that runs from February 1-2 and will feature approximately 230 exhibitors. SPIE Photonics West, which will feature hundreds of new product launches, product demonstrations, and panel sessions, runs from February 4-6, and is expected to draw more than 20,000 attendees and 1300 exhibitors.

Attendees walking the exhibit floor during SPIE BiOS and SPIE Photonics West may not be able to see each and every technology presented by the 230 and 1300 exhibitors, respectively, but the following list—broken up by category—represents a good cross-section of the technologies that will be showcased:

SPIE Photonics West will also feature more than 70 educational courses, and a number of special events, including plenary sessions and hot topics, technical events, social and networking events, SPIE membership events, student events, and professional development events.

In addition to the conference and exhibition, Laser Focus World will hold the 2014 Lasers & Photonics Marketplace Seminar, an annual event now in its 26th year and held in conjunction with SPIE Photonics West. It will take place on Monday, February 3, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel (just a block from Moscone). Laser Focus World, Strategies Unlimited, BioOptics World, and Industrial Laser Solutions invite you to the only comprehensive qualitative and quantitative laser market seminar in the industry, with a keynote presentation this year from Drew Nelson, president of IQE, who will speak on European photonics initiatives.

A distinguished panel will discuss the state of the laser industry, including Peter Leibinger, managing partner of TRUMPF; Sri Venkat, senior vice president of Coherent; Søren Isaksen, chairman of NKT Photonics; and Martin Seifert, president of Nufern. Several other important presentations will look at markets for all lasers, plus markets for biophotonics, passive optics, laser additive manufacturing, and laser projectors.

And finally, the 2014 Prism Awards will be presented at SPIE Photonics West 2014. Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation is an international competition that honors the best new photonics products on the market.
