To strengthen its position in ultrafast fiber and supercontinuum lasers, NKT Photonics is acquiring Fianium for EUR 27 million.

To strengthen its position in ultrafast fiber and supercontinuum lasers, NKT Photonics (Birkerød, Denmark) is acquiring Fianium (Southampton, England) in an all-cash transaction woth approximately EUR 27 million. The acquisition will also improve NKT Photonics’ global market position in terms of geographical coverage, manufacturing facilities, and complementary product portfolios.

The primary markets for NKT Photonics products are scientific and OEM customers, with an increasing focus on commercial applications.Fianium supplies both ultrafast and supercontinuum fiber lasers and has a strong presence in the U.S., combined with a global distribution network. In 2015, Fianium revenue was approximately EUR 9 million, and it has 54 employees.

Jens Maaløe, Chairman of the Board’s NKT Photonics Committee, said, "Gaining commercial scale is the key value driver for NKT Photonics. The acquisition of Fianium is not only a good strategic match but it is also an important step towards becoming a leading industrial supplier within NKT Photonics’ largest business segment, Imaging & Metrology."

The acquisition does not impact NKT’s 2016 outlook of consolidated flat organic growth and operational EBITDA margin of 9.4%, which is on par with 2015. The acquisition is, however, expected to have a positive impact for NKT Photonics’ 2016 financial development.

Fianium has told its customers that all warranties on Fianium products are valid and all Fianium products will be supported. In addition, Fianium and NKT are working on technical solutions to make the two companies' systems compatible. Fianium will continue to offer gain fibers and modules for ultrafast lasers as a strategic product line for NKT Photonics, and the Fianium facilities in Southampton will continue under the NKT Photonics name.
