Forth Dimension Displays (ForthDD; Fife, Scotland), which makes fast binary spatial light modulators (SLMs), and LightTrans (Jena, Germany), producer of VirtualLab Fusion optical-design and simulation software, are collaborating on an adaptation of LightTrans's VirtualLab Fusion software so that it can support high-speed binary phase modulators made by ForthDD. Based on ferroelectric liquid-crystal-on-silicon (FLCOS) technology, ForthDD's binary SLM has QXGA (2048 x 1536 pixel) resolution at speeds up to 4.5 kHz with a pixel pitch of 8.2 μm. The drive interface supports either video (using the DisplayPort standard) or a dedicated flash-memory-based interface calling off up to 1024 binary phase masks from the onboard memory and controlled using flexible trigger ports.

Analyze and optimize entire AO systems
The PC-based VirtualLab Fusion allows optical engineers to convert imagery into phase masks, such as are used in adaptive optical (AO) systems. Phase masks can be computed using VirtualLab Fusion and the data transferred to the SLM; the software enables analysis and optimization of the entire adaptive laser system (laser sources, beam-delivery optics, and the diffractive SLM).
