• Optical storage to be discussed at Storage Visions Conference

• Applications invited for 2006-2007 MRS/OSA Congressional Fellowships

• Oriscape's consumer head-mounted display has Kopin's microdisplay technology
  December 20, 2005, Shenzhen, China--Shenzhen Oriscape Electronic Co. (Shenzhen, China) has unveiled a 3-D stereoscopic head-mounted display (HMD) that incorporates VGA color displays produced by Kopin Corp. (Taunton, MA).
• 3M to build LCD optical film manufacturing facility in Poland
  December 16, 2005, St. Paul, MN--3M announced its intention to build a liquid crystal display (LCD) optical film manufacturing facility in Poland to support the fast-growing LCD-TV market in Europe and to better serve its customers.
• PhAST, Laser Focus World partner for Innovation Awards
  December 15, 2005, Washington, DC--The Photonic Applications, Systems, Technologies or PhAST Conference and Laser Focus World have formed a partnership for the 2006 PhAST/Laser Focus World Innovation Awards Program.
• Airborne Laser (ABL) completes ground tests
  December 14, 2005, St. Louis, MO--The Boeing-led Airborne Laser team has completed a series of tests involving its high energy laser at the Systems Integration Lab at Edwards Air Force Base, CA. During this test series, lasing duration and power were demonstrated at levels suitable for the destruction of multiple classes of ballistic missiles. This is the second of two program-significant knowledge points planned for 2005.
• IPS laser technology selected for THz spectrometer
  December 7, 2005, Monmouth Junction, NJ--Innovative Photonic Solutions (IPS), a photonics company specializing in high performance semiconductor light source development, has been selected by a large government prime contractor to develop an ultrastable, tunable laser system that will be integrated into an advanced terahertz spectrometer currently under development.
• European collaboration launches Photonics21
  December 5, 2005, Brussels, Belgium--More than 200 experts from 16 European member states and 120 companies have gathered for a workshop to officially launch the European Technology Platform Photonics21.
• Sofradir's MCT imager to capture atmospheric data for Venus Express
  December 2, 2005, Grenoble, France--The recently launched Venus Express spacecraft has been a boon to optoelectronics manufacturers; Sofradir just announced that its 320- x 256-pixel mid-wave IR mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) IR detector is deployed in the craft's SOIR (solar-occultation IR) instrument, one of three data channels being used in an imaging spectrometer to measure UV and IR radiation.
• Laboratory for Laser Energetics secures $72.6 million
  December 2, 2005, Rochester, NY--The University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) will receive $72.6 million in funding, both for current operations and construction of its new, four-beam extension facility, through a bill signed Nov. 19 by President George W. Bush. The $72.6 million, including $25 million for the new Omega EP facility, is part of the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act for 2006.
