Airborne Laser (ABL) completes ground tests
December 14, 2005, St. Louis, MO--The Boeing-led Airborne Laser team has completed a series of tests involving its high energy laser at the Systems Integration Lab at Edwards Air Force Base, CA. During this test series, lasing duration and power were demonstrated at levels suitable for the destruction of multiple classes of ballistic missiles. This is the second of two program-significant knowledge points planned for 2005.

Sofradir's MCT imager to capture atmospheric data for Venus Express
December 2, 2005, Grenoble, France--The recently launched Venus Express spacecraft has been a boon to optoelectronics manufacturers; Sofradir just announced that its 320- x 256-pixel mid-wave IR mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) IR detector is deployed in the craft's SOIR (solar-occultation IR) instrument, one of three data channels being used in an imaging spectrometer to measure UV and IR radiation.

Laboratory for Laser Energetics secures $72.6 million
December 2, 2005, Rochester, NY--The University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) will receive $72.6 million in funding, both for current operations and construction of its new, four-beam extension facility, through a bill signed Nov. 19 by President George W. Bush. The $72.6 million, including $25 million for the new Omega EP facility, is part of the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act for 2006.
