    October 9, 2008--Cree recessed downlights will be sold exclusively under two brands of the Zumtobel Group, Thorn and Zumtobel. Global adoption of solid-state lighting accelerating at a rapid pace, says Cree.
  • SPI Lasers joins Trumpf
    October 8, 2008--Laser and machine-tool manufacturer Trumpf (Ditzingen, Germany) has assumed control of SPI Lasers (Southampton, England) effective October 7, 2008. The bid submitted by Trumpf became effective after shareholders of SPI Lasers approved the sale of more than 90% of the company's shares to Trumpf.
  • HiPER laser fusion project launches; builds hope for new energy source
    October 7, 2008--A prestigious launch event was held yesterday at the Science Museum in London to mark the start of the HiPER Preparatory Phase Project. The High Power laser for Energy Research (HiPER) project, headquartered at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (near Oxford, England), consists of a large-scale laser system designed to demonstrate significant energy production from inertial fusion, while supporting a broad base of high-power laser interaction science.
  • SCHOTT seeks majority in Moritex to strengthen imaging, lighting portfolio
    October 7, 2008--Technology and glass company SCHOTT (Mainz, Germany) issued a tender offer bid to acquire a majority in Moritex Corporation (Tokyo, Japan). With some 450 employees and sales of approximately $136 million dollars (fiscal year 2007/08), Moritex is a manufacturer of lighting systems based on light-emitting diode (LED) and fiber-optic technology, as well as optical machine-vision systems for industrial image processing in Japan.

  • 2008 Innovationspreis winners receive awards
    October 3, 2008--Winners of the 2008 Berthold Leibinger Foundation Innovation Prize received their awards last month during a standing-room-only ceremony at Trumpf headquarters in Ditzingen, Germany. For 2008, the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung presented a total of four awards and a "special prize."
  • DILAS Diodenlaser forms new industrial laser business unit
    October 3, 2008--Laser manufacturer DILAS Diodenlaser GmbH (Mainz, Germany) formed a new business unit, DILAS Industrial Laser Systems. The independent business unit within DILAS Diodenlaser GmbH will focus on developing and manufacturing turnkey diode laser systems, driven by the success of its COMPACT Series fiber-coupled systems with power levels up to 500 W.
  • DOE invests $17.6 million in photovoltaic initiative
    October 2, 2008--The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded US$17.6 million to six early-stage photovoltaic technology projects, part of the Solar America Initiative.
