• Daylight Solutions awarded $5.3M contract with U.S. Navy and $5M series B financing.
  September 22, 2008--High-power mid-wave infrared laser system to be delivered in early 2009. The company also announced a series B round of funding for $5M.
• 'Green' optics conference, OPTOmism, announces call for papers
  September 19, 2008--OPTOmism: Photonics for the Green Revolution, to be held by Laser Focus World (Nashua, NH) and the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA; Washington, DC) at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA, May 18-20, 2009, is announcing a call for papers.
• SmartGlass International launches variable-transmission windows
  September 19, 2008--SmartGlass International Ltd. (SGI; Dublin, Ireland), a licensee of Research Frontiers Inc. (Woodbury, NY), has launched a line of "SmartGlass" architectural window products at the 100% Detail show, which is being held from September 18 to 21, 2008 at Earls Court in London, England. (The 100% Detail show features new developments in the architectural field.)
• Telescope conference marks 400th anniversary of telescope patent
  September 18, 2008--An conference entitled, "400 Years of Astronomical Telescopes -- A Review of History, Science and Technology" begins Sept. 29 in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.
• SPIE Innovation Summit to focus on solar, biophotonics, and solid-state lighting
  September 17, 2008--Solar, biophotonics, and next-generation lighting technology experts with success in leveraging invention and intellectual property into profit will provide insights at a Photonics Innovation Summit sponsored by SPIE (Bellingham, WA) this fall. The SPIE Photonics Innovation Summit will be held at the San Francisco, CA, Airport Marriott Hotel on 6 November.
• VIASPACE sees multi-unit reorder for laser-based automotive humidity detection system
  September 16, 2008--VIASPACE announced that its VIASPACE Energy (Pasadena, CA) business unit received a multi-unit follow-on order from a major automotive customer for its HS-1000 VIASENSOR, a laser-based humidity detection instrument. The customer's name was not revealed due to competitive concerns. The VIASENSOR makes real-time measurements of humidity levels in industrial and automotive gas streams for environmental monitoring and process control.
• Microscan acquires Siemens Machine Vision
  September 15, 2008--Purchase to expand Microscan's smart-camera portfolio should appear seamless to customers and partners.
• Thin-film and organic photovoltaic manufacturing to reach 29 GWp
  September 15, 2008--A report by NanoMarkets predicts that manufacturing capacity of thin-film and organic photovoltaics will grow to 29 Gigawatts at peak sunlight by 2015.
• QPC Lasers completes DoD contract; demonstrates first high-power surface-emitting eye-safe lasers
  September 12, 2008--QPC Lasers (Sylmar, CA), developer of high-brightness, high-power semiconductor chip-based lasers, successfully completed its initial Department of Defense (DoD) contract to develop and deliver high-power eye-safe surface-emitting diode pumps for directed-energy weapons applications. The Company has been invited to submit a proposal for a much larger follow on contract.
• Halma acquires Fiberguide Industries
  September 11, 2008--Fiberguide to join Halma's photonics business in its Boonton, NJ-based Health and Analysis sector.
