  • e2v technologies announces proposed acquisition of QP Semiconductor
    September 2, 2008--e2v technologies (Chelmsford, England), developer and manufacturer of imaging components and sub-systems, announced that its subsidiary, e2v Holdings, has conditionally agreed to buy QP Semiconductor (Santa Clara, CA), for an initial cash consideration of $65 million dollars.
  • IMEC and Plextronics collaborate on high-efficiency reproducible organic solar cells
    September 2, 2008--IMEC (Leuven, Belgium), Europe's leading independent nanoelectronics research institute, and Plextronics (Pittsburgh, PA), a technology company specializing in printed solar, lighting, and other organic electronics, signed an agreement to collaborate on state-of-the-art materials and inks for organic solar cells.
  • Staff says Bell Labs has ended basic physics research
    August 29, 2008--According to an August article in Nature entitled "Bell Labs bottoms out," physicists at Bell Labs claim that the once iconic Bell Laboratories has finally pulled out of basic science. Just four scientists are left working in Bell's fundamental physics department in Murray Hill, New Jersey, according to the article. Others have either left or been reassigned to other parts of the company, and a major materials-fabrication facility has been shut down.
  • U.S. Display Consortium changes name to FlexTech Alliance
    August 29, 2008--The U. S. Display Consortium (USDC; San Jose, CA) is formally expanding its mission to support the emerging flexible, printed electronics market and has changed the organization's official name to the FlexTech Alliance to reflect this new activity and opportunity. At the same time, the board recommitted its support for supply chain development for next-generation displays, such as OLEDs, flexible displays, MEMs-based, and 3-D displays.

  • Avacta partners on laser-based gas detection technology for the petrochemical industry
    August 26, 2008--Avacta Group (York, England), developer of detection and analysis technology aimed at the pharmaceutical, healthcare, industrial and security sectors, entered into a product development partnership with one of the market leaders in toxic and flammable gas detection for the development of a new hydrogen sulphide sensor for industrial safety applications that uses its cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS) technology.
  • OEwaves awarded contract to develop photonic filters for communications
    August 26, 2008--Photonic products and solutions provider OEwaves (Pasadena, CA) was awarded a contract to develop frequency agile band-pass and notch filters to support receiver systems for military and communication applications. The filter development builds upon OEwaves' proprietary photonics filter technology concept that provides wideband tunability.
  • Spectra-Physics reduces staff at Tucson laser diode facility
    August 22, 2008--According to an August 20 article in the Arizona Daily Star, the Spectra-Physics facility at 3321 E. Global Road, near South Country Club and East Bilby roads, is cutting its work force primarily in assembly, testing, and packaging operations for its laser diodes, said general manager Scott Dunbar. The facility has laid off 29 of its employees and has plans to let go of about 50 more through the first quarter of next year.
