QinetiQ awarded DARPA Phase 2 contract to develop 'first-of-their-kind' sensors
August 22, 2008--A QinetiQ-led team has secured a 33-month $22 million follow-on research contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in support of its Large Area Coverage Optical Search While Track and Engage (LACOSTE) program. Defense and security equipment firm QinetiQ is working with Goodrich ISR Systems on the sensor technology.

Gooch & Housego fiber-optic modules qualified for ESA space mission
August 21, 2008--Gooch & Housego announced a supply deal with Swiss space equipment supplier, Oerlikon Space, for its Modular Fibre Optic Assembly (MFOA). Oerlikon Space will use the MFOA as part of its work with the European Space Agency (ESA) on its Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission.

Asylum Research settles patent dispute with Veeco
August 13, 2008--Asylum Research Corporation (Santa Barbara, CA), a manufacturer of atomic-force microscopes (AFMs) and accessories, as well as AFMs integrated with confocal microscopes, announced that the patent litigation between it and Veeco Instruments Inc. (Plainview, NY) that started in September 2003 has been settled.
