Thermo Fisher Scientific ranked as leading IR spectroscopy vendor
August 13, 2008--Thermo Fisher Scientific (Madison, WI) received the highest overall vendor rating for infrared (IR) spectroscopy instrumentation according to the Worldwide Molecular Spectroscopy Survey published by Strategic Directions International (SDi) in July 2008. The primary factors for selection of an IR vendor include performance, service, instrument specifications, and vendor experience.

OIDA announces Photonic Integration Forum
August 13, 2008--The Optoelectronic Industry Development Association (OIDA; Washington, DC) has announced a new Photonic Integration Forum to be held October 6-7, 2008 in Monterey, CA. Photonic integration is widely regarded as the optical industry's best hope for scaling to meet future bandwidth requirements while similarly reducing cost per bit.

IPG awarded contract to supply fiber lasers to BMW for door welding applications
August 8, 2008--Fiber laser and amplifier manufacturer IPG Photonics Corporation (Oxford, MA) announced that its German subsidiary, IPG Laser GmbH, received a major order for multi-kilowatt, continuous-wave Ytterbium fiber laser systems totaling 63 kW in power from the BMW Group in Munich, Germany for a new production line for the welding of automotive doors. The contract represents the first large-scale production use of fiber laser systems for the German automobile manufacturer.

ULIS wins contract to supply French army with uncooled thermal sensors
August 8, 2008--Infrared vision specialist ULIS (Veurey-Voroize, France), a division of Sofradir, signed a five-year contract with Sagem Defense Securite (Groupe SAFRAN) as a primary supplier for cameras, including the French army's Future Infantry Soldier System (FELIN). Uncooled microbolometers will be used to fit the thermal imaging rifle sights, multifunction goggles, and cameras for day and night operation and improved target acquisition.

August 6, 2008--Nextreme Thermal Solutions (Durham, NC), which makes microscale thermal and power management products for the photonics and electronics industries, today announced securing $13 million in Series B financing.

Innolume secures Series C funding to ramp production and market its quantum dot lasers
August 5, 2008--Innolume (Dortmund, Germany and Santa Clara, CA), provider of quantum dot (QD) laser diodes and modules covering the 1000 nm to 1320 nm optical spectrum, secured a Series C round of financing for $13.4 million dollars. The round was led by S-Group Capital Management Limited (SGCM) with Applied Ventures, LLC joining as a new investor.

LG-Nortel acquires Novera Optics; invests in optical Ethernet
August 5, 2008--LG-Nortel (Seoul, Korea), a joint venture of LG Electronics and Nortel established in 2005 that provides telecommunications equipment and network solutions, closed the acquisition of Novera Optics (Santa Clara, CA), a developer of fiber-optic access solutions that extend high-speed carrier Ethernet services from optical core networks to customer premises.
