  • Enablence acquires DuPont Photonics Technologies and DuPont Invests in Enablence
    July 11, 2008--Enablence Technologies (Ottawa, ON, Canada), a supplier of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) equipment and optical components and subsystems for access, metro, and long haul markets, signed a definitive Asset Purchase Agreement with DuPont Photonics (Wilmington, MA), a wholly owned subsidiary of DuPont (Wilmington, DE), to acquire certain assets of DuPont Photonics. Concurrent with the Agreement, DuPont will make a cash investment in Enablence.
  • GSI Group to acquire Excel Technology for $360 million
    July 10, 2008--Laser and motion-control manufacturer GSI Group has agreed to acquire Excel Technology Inc. in an all-cash transaction for $32.00 per share, or approximately $360 million. The merger is expected to expand the product offerings of both companies and broaden their technology base and distribution channels.
  • QPC finishes $1M development phase of RGB lasers for TV contract
    July 10, 1008--QPC Lasers has announced the completion of its $1M first-phase contract to develop red, green, and blue lasers for large-screen TVs.
  • University of Paderborn, Boeing, and others form laser-based manufacturing research center
    July 9, 2008--Interested in developing large-scale layer-by-layer part manufacturing processes, the University of Paderborn (Paderborn, Germany) has joined with EOS Electro Optical Systems (Krailling), Evonik Industries (Marl), MCP HEK Tooling (Luebeck), and Boeing's Berlin branch to form the Direct Manufacturing Research Center (DMRC).
  • ISP Optics acquires the coating assets of Opticorp
    July 8, 2008--ISP Optics Corporation (Irvington, NY), a manufacturer of precision infrared optical components, acquired the coating assets of Opticorp (Chelmsford, MA), a provider of high-quality infrared optical coatings. The DAK Group, an Investment Banking firm headquartered in Rochelle Park, NJ, served as financial advisor to ISP Optics. The acquisition continues the vertical integration of ISP Optics in the infrared industry.
  • Gooch & Housego acquires General Optics for US$21 M
    July 7, 2008--Optoelectronics manufacturer Gooch & Housego has acquired the operations of optics manufacturer General Optics from GSI Group for $21 million.

  • Montana State University researchers receive $750,000 laser grant from NASA
    July 1, 2008--Montana State University (MSU; Bozeman, MT) researchers received a three-year, $750,000 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Admimistration (NASA; Washington, DC) to fund their work on using lasers to study earth's atmosphere and climate. The grant comes from the space agency's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research; MSU is one of only a dozen universities around the country to receive one of the grants.
  • StockerYale awarded evergreen contract for laser diodes
    July 1, 2008--StockerYale (Salem, NH), a designer and manufacturer of structured light lasers, light-emitting diode (LED) modules, and specialty optical fibers, announced that its Photonics Products unit has been awarded an evergreen contract to supply custom designed, packaged laser diodes for the telecommunications division of a diversified, multi-billion dollar global technology company.
