Research project launched for laser that improves eye condition
June 13, 2008--The German Federal Ministry for Education and Research launched a new project, which was selected as the winner of the "Innovation Competition for the Advancement of Medical Technology" by the ministry, aimed at implementing an exact dosage of laser radiation for each individual eye during retinal procedures by ensuring that the laser automatically adjusts to the optimal temperature needed for a specific treatment.

NanoGram's solar cell manufacturing process wins DOE award
June 11, 2008--A laser-based silicon-deposition technique developed by NanoGram Corporation (Milpitas, CA) for solar cell manufacturing has won an Energy Innovator Award from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The process reduces solar cell cost to the level of thin-film photovoltaics while delivering high efficiency, according to NanoGram.

SPIE installs new solar electricity system
June 10, 2008--From a story in The Bellingham Herald, SPIE has installed a new solar electric system on the roof of its Bellingham headquarters. The system, installed by Ecotech Energy Systems of Bellingham, is the largest solar-electricity-generating installation in Whatcom County, according to Ecotech owner Dana Brandt.

Leica Geosystems' imaging system saves lives after Sichuan, China earthquake
June 6, 2008--Just after the devastating May 12th earthquake in Sichuan, China, local authorities coordinating disaster relief efforts required a fast, accurate, and comprehensive overview of the damage and affected areas. They chose to use a Leica Geosystems' (Heerbrugg, Switzerland) ADS40 airborne digital sensor, which detected "SOS700" on a rooftop, enabling dispatch of aid to 700 stranded villagers.

Ultrafast laser market forecasted at $260 million in 2008
June 6, 2008--A new report entitled Ultrafast Lasers--2008 from Strategies Unlimited (Mountain View, CA) forecasts that the ultrafast laser market will reach about $260 million in 2008 with healthy growth expected in coming years, fed by innovations in technology, new suppliers to the market, and some novel applications and strategies. Margins are high and the products are almost immune from commoditization, but the market is overfilled with competitors.

(Melville, NY) and Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine (Chicago, IL) announced the opening of a collaborative core microscopy imaging center, establishing a partnership that brings improved research capabilities to Northwestern, while providing critical feedback for Nikon product development.

Axsun to supply tunable lasers for LightLab's OCT imaging system
June 3, 2008--Photonic component and subsystems manufacturer Axsun Technologies (Billerica, MA) entered into a multi-million dollar volume purchasing agreement with LightLab Imaging (Westford, MA). Under the multi-year exclusive agreement for cardiac optical coherence tomography (OCT), Axsun will provide advanced tunable lasers for LightLab's next-generation OCT imaging system.
