• PhAST/Laser Focus World Innovation Award goes to Coherent
  May 2, 2008--The Photonic Applications, Systems and Technologies (PhAST) Conference and Laser Focus World magazine are pleased to announce that Coherent has been selected as the recipient of this year's PhAST/Laser Focus World Innovation Award for its OPSL-577-3, the twin embodiment of technical and application innovation in exploiting the wavelength and power scalability of optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) technology.
• NASA selects Kopin for solar cell development contract
  May 2, 2008, Taunton, MA--Kopin has been selected for the award of a $600,000 solar cell development contract from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA; Washington, DC). The contract is the second phase of a Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program to develop indium nitride (InN)-based quantum dot solar cell technology. Kopin's partners on this NASA STTR project include groups at Virginia Tech and Magnolia Optical Technologies.
• ZYGO scientist elected as SPIE Fellow
  May 1, 2008, Middlefield, CT--Dr. Peter de Groot, director of research and development at ZYGO Corporation, has been elected a Fellow of SPIE, the international society for the science and application of light.

• Tessera introduces new low-cost optical zoom technology for camera phones
  April 30, 2008, San Jose, CA--Tessera Technologies announced the OptiML 3X zoom capability for camera module and handset manufacturers.
• National Physical Laboratory purchases OCT scanner from Michelson Diagnostics
  April 30, 2008, Kent, UK--The UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has taken delivery of a state-of-the-art optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanner from Kent-based Michelson Diagnostics Ltd.
• European scientists team up to develop next-generation hydrocarbon sensing systems
  April 29, 2008, Gerbrunn, Germany--Scientists and engineers from all across Europe have joined forces in the recently launched EU project, "Photonic sensing of hydrocarbons based on innovative mid infrared lasers," (SENSHY) to develop a new generation of laser-based spectroscopic gas-sensing systems for hydrocarbons.
• CVI Technical Optics receives The Queen's Award for Enterprise, International Trade category
  April 29, 2008, Onchan, Isle of Man--CVI Technical Optics, part of the global CVI Melles Griot Group, announced that it was awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise 2008 in the International Trade category.
• Fujitsu to reorganize photonics business
  April 28, 2008, Tokyo, Japan, Apr 28, 2008--Fujitsu Limited and subsidiary Fujitsu Access Limited say they plan to merge and reorganize their photonic systems businesses in July to strengthen their photonics systems development, manufacturing, and sales operations for the Japanese telecom market.
• Applied Energetics receives $4.5 million U.S. Army contract for laser-guided energy
  April 28, 2008, Tucson, AZ--Applied Energetics has been awarded a $4.5 million sole source contract from the U.S. Army's Research, Development and Engineering Command (ARDEC; Picatinny, NJ) for the development and advancement of the company's laser-guided energy technology.
