  • Lumera merges with GigOptix to focus on high-speed optical interconnects
    April 1, 2008, Bothell, WA--Photonic communications company Lumera Corporation entered into an agreement to merge with privately held GigOptix (Palo Alto, CA), a provider of integrated circuits for optically connected communication systems. The combined company will be listed on the NASDAQ market under the name GigOptix, Inc., and will be led by GigOptix's CEO and chairman Avi Katz, who will serve as CEO and chairman of the combined company.
  • ROADM component maker Xtellus secures expansion capital
    April 1, Morris Plains, NJ--Xtellus, a supplier of scalable wavelength selective switches (WSS) for reconfigurable optical networks, announced the addition of $8.3 million in growth capital. Led by a new investor, NanoDimension Limited Partnership, this round also includes Xtellus's existing investors.

  • Israel rejects U.S. anti-rocket laser system
    March 25, 2008, Tel Aviv, Israel--According to a breaking news story on WorldTribune.com, Israel has concluded that a U.S. laser system would not serve as an interim defense solution for the frequent rocket and missile attacks it has sustained. The Defense Ministry concluded that Skyguard, a laser-based system developed by Northrop Grumman, could not guarantee defense against short-range missiles and rockets fired either from Lebanon or the Gaza Strip, officials said.
  • University of Delaware receives $3.75 million DOE grant for solar research

  • Sun Microsystems wins $44 million DARPA contract to develop on-chip optical networks
    March 24, 2008, Santa Clara, CA--The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded Sun Microsystems $44.29 million funding for a five and a half-year research project focused on microchip interconnectivity via on-chip optical networks enabled by silicon photonics and proximity communication.
  • State job grant to help Tessera expand wafer-level optics business
    March 24, 2008, Charlotte, NC--The North Carolina Economic Investment Committee is awarding a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) to Tessera, a provider of miniaturization technologies for the electronics industry, that will enable the company to add 185 jobs and invest approximately $30 million in its Charlotte-based wafer-level optics facilities during the next five years.
