• OLED display market to top $4.5 billion by 2010
  March 10, 2008, San Jose, CA--The global organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display industry is expected to experience high growth rates over the next five years, according to a new report from Global Industry Analysts.
• OSA visits Capitol Hill to call for increased investment in Federal R&D funding
  March 7, 2008, Washington, DC--Optical Society of America (OSA) members came together on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, March 5th to speak with their senators and representatives about science policy issues as part of the annual Congressional Visits Day (CVD), held each year to remind legislators of the impact that R&D funding decreases have on America's ability to compete globally. The OSA partnered with the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA) for this year's event.
• Aculight and Koheras sign joint marketing agreement
  March 7, 2008, Bothell, WA and Birkeroed, Denmark--Aculight Corporation, a developer of laser technologies, and Koheras, a developer and manufacturer of fiber lasers, entered into a joint marketing agreement in which Koheras will exclusively sell and market Aculight's Argos single-frequency, continuous-wave, multi-Watt, tunable optical parametric oscillator (OPO) in several European countries, including the U.K., Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, BeNeLux, and the Nordic countries.
• Student wins $30,000 prize for new polarized LED
  March 6, 2008, Troy, NY--Martin Schubert's polarized light-emitting diode could improve displays and save energy.
• Zecotek and Fujikura sign laser manufacturing/commercialization agreement
  March 4, 2008, Vancouver, BC, Canada--Zecotek Photonics announced that Zecotek Laser Systems Singapore, a wholly wned subsidiary, signed an agreement with Fujikura of Japan to develop, manufacture, and commercialize Zecotek and Fujikura laser products, associated components and systems, including Zecotek's crystal and fiber-based lasers and Fujikura's infrared fiber lasers.
• RED-C and Proximion cooperate to promote dispersion-compensating EDFAs
  March 4, 2008, San Francisco, CA--RED-C Optical Networks, a provider of integrated optical subsystems based on optical amplification and monitoring technology, and Proximion (Kista, Sweden), a provider of dispersion compensation solutions, announced their cooperation in promoting an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) design optimized to take advantage of the unique properties of dispersion-compensation module (DCM) technology.
• Bandwidth-hungry beast rises at OFC/NFOEC 2008
  March 3, 2008, San Diego, CA--Now that 40 Gbit/s systems are being commercially deployed and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) is really coming home (see www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/318567 & 318568 & 309265), Plenary and Market Watch presentations at last week's OFC/NFOEC were heavy with discussions surrounding 100 Gbit/s networks and even Terabit networks to feed the bandwidth-hungry beast, better known as the Internet.

  February 28, 2008, Albuquerque, NM--Emcore Corporation has completed its acquisition of the telecom-related portion of Intel's Optical Platform Division.
• Quantel Group consolidates non-medical businesses with new division
  February 27, 2008, Les Ulis, France--The Quantel Group, a global provider of laser solutions to the industrial, scientific, and medical communities since 1970, has created a new division in order to consolidate its business operations in the non-medical arena.
