    November 14, 2008--Given Imaging (Yoqneam, Israel), manufacturers of the miniature PillCam that when swallowed, provides images of the digestive path in humans (see www.bioopticsworld.com/articles/340103), reported a revenue increase of 12% to $31.1 million in the third quarter of 2008 (ended September 30, 2008), from $27.7 million in the third quarter of 2007.

  • Enablence adds Pannaway to its growing list of FTTx acquisitions
    November 11, 2008--Enablence Technologies (Ottawa, ON, Canada), a supplier of fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) equipment for triple-play residential and business services, signed a definitive agreement to acquire Pannaway Technologies (), a provider of broadband access solutions that bring together traditional plain old telephone (POTs) service with active point-to-point optical networks. Pannaway will merge with Enablence's FTTx Networks Division, subject to certain approvals.
  • StockerYale receives $2.1 million laser order from BAE Systems
    November 11, 2008--StockerYale (Salem, NH), a designer and manufacturer of structured-light lasers, LED modules, and specialty optical fibers, received a $2.1 million production order from BAE Systems to supply BAE with lasers for the Advanced Threat Infrared Countermeasure (ATIRCM) system, a laser-based infrared countermeasures system that protects aircraft against widely deployed heat-seeking missiles. Production is expected to begin in the first quarter of fiscal 2009.

  • Coherent financials may signal challenging times for laser industry
    November 7, 2008--Coherent (Santa Clara, CA) announced financial results for its fiscal fourth quarter (Q4) ended September 27, 2008. With net sales of $142.0 million in Q4 compared to net sales of $158.9 million for Q4 2007--an 11% drop, Coherent also announced plans for a "prudent" 5.5% work-force reduction. Orders received for the fiscal year ended September 27, 2008 were $594.0 million, compared to $591.0 million in orders received for the fiscal year ended September 29, 2007.
  • IPG reports phenomenal financials, but adds some caution
    November 7, 2008--IPG Photonics Corporation (Oxford, MA), manufacturer of high-power fiber lasers and amplifiers, reported that revenues for the third quarter of 2008 increased by 29% to $62.0 million. While revenue growth was driven by sales of fiber lasers for materials processing applications, which increased by 47% from the third quarter of 2007, management added some caution going into Q4 2008.
