Qioptiq completes sale of its optical coatings business to Artemis Optical
November 4, 2008--Optical solutions provider Qioptiq (Paris, France) completed the sale of its Plymouth, U.K. coatings business, Qioptiq Coatings. In a management buyout, the team, led by Ian Moyes, agreed to purchase the business from Qioptiq SAS for an undisclosed amount. The new company, Artemis Optical, will continue to provide advanced optical coatings at the Plymouth facility.

Bookham achieves "historical highs" for quarterly revenue and profits
October 31, 2008--Optical components, modules, and sub-systems manufacturer Bookham (San Jose, CA) announced historical highs for both revenue and adjusted EBITDA (a measure of profitability defined as earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) for its first quarter fiscal year 2009, ended September 27, 2008. Revenue was $66.5 million, an increase of 6% compared with $62.6 million in the previous quarter and up 23% from $54.3 million for the same quarter last year.

Andor/Bayspec collaboration improves Raman spectroscopy
October 31, 2008--Andor Technology (Belfast, Northern Ireland), a provider of scientific imaging and spectroscopy solutions, announced the successful outcome of a collaboration with fiber-optic components company Bayspec (Fremont, CA) on a new portable spectroscopic instrument that allows up to three times greater collection efficiency than standard Czerny-Turner spectrographs.

Nobel Laureates to speak at OPTOmism 2009
October 28, 2008--Dr. Steven Chu and Dr. Arno Penzias, both Nobel Laureates for physics, will be plenary speakers at the OPTOmism 2009 conference and exhibition. OPTOmism will focus on photonic products for green technology and is being co-founded by the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA; Washington, DC) and Pennwell Corporation (Tulsa, OK). The inaugural event will be held in Santa Clara, CA, May 18-20, 2009.
