• Cognex to host free machine-vision seminars
  November 5, 2008--Machine-vision-systems supplier Cognex (Natick, MA) announced a new series of free machine-vision seminars exclusively for manufacturing professionals.
• Optech to host first Innovative Lidar Solutions Conference
  November 5, 2008--Optech Incorporated (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), a manufacturer of advanced lidar survey instruments, announced that its first Innovative Lidar Solutions Conference (ILSC) will be held in Toronto on June 24 to 26, 2009. An initial call for papers has been issued.
• Spirits high at ICALEO, despite economy
  November 4, 2008-- There is little doubt that laser materials processing--the primary emphasis of the 27th International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO) 2009 (presented by the Laser Institute of America; LIA, Orlando, FL and held October 20-23 in Temecula, CA)--may suffer in the current economy.
• Qioptiq completes sale of its optical coatings business to Artemis Optical
  November 4, 2008--Optical solutions provider Qioptiq (Paris, France) completed the sale of its Plymouth, U.K. coatings business, Qioptiq Coatings. In a management buyout, the team, led by Ian Moyes, agreed to purchase the business from Qioptiq SAS for an undisclosed amount. The new company, Artemis Optical, will continue to provide advanced optical coatings at the Plymouth facility.
• Labsphere and Otsuka partner on spectral light measurement systems
  November 3, 2008--Labsphere and Otsuka Electronics announce partnership for next-generation spectral flux measurements. Customers to benefit from HalfMoon light-test systems for solid-state lighting and display testing.
• Bookham achieves "historical highs" for quarterly revenue and profits
  October 31, 2008--Optical components, modules, and sub-systems manufacturer Bookham (San Jose, CA) announced historical highs for both revenue and adjusted EBITDA (a measure of profitability defined as earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) for its first quarter fiscal year 2009, ended September 27, 2008. Revenue was $66.5 million, an increase of 6% compared with $62.6 million in the previous quarter and up 23% from $54.3 million for the same quarter last year.
• Andor/Bayspec collaboration improves Raman spectroscopy
  October 31, 2008--Andor Technology (Belfast, Northern Ireland), a provider of scientific imaging and spectroscopy solutions, announced the successful outcome of a collaboration with fiber-optic components company Bayspec (Fremont, CA) on a new portable spectroscopic instrument that allows up to three times greater collection efficiency than standard Czerny-Turner spectrographs.
• Clemson honors Charles Townes with optical science laboratories dedication
  October 29, 2008--Clemson University (Clemson, SC) celebrated its longtime connection with Nobel Prize-winner Charles H. Townes this week by naming its optical-science laboratories in his honor.
• Optical coatings market forecast is $7.4 billion by 2012
  October 28, 2008--Buoyed by interest from the nanotechnology, display, and biotechnology sectors, the market for optical coatings is projected to reach $7.4 billion by 2012, according to market intelligence firm Global Industry Analysts (San Jose, CA). Demand from the electronics and instrumentation sector, medical, and transportation industries will propel market expansion.
• Nobel Laureates to speak at OPTOmism 2009
  October 28, 2008--Dr. Steven Chu and Dr. Arno Penzias, both Nobel Laureates for physics, will be plenary speakers at the OPTOmism 2009 conference and exhibition. OPTOmism will focus on photonic products for green technology and is being co-founded by the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA; Washington, DC) and Pennwell Corporation (Tulsa, OK). The inaugural event will be held in Santa Clara, CA, May 18-20, 2009.
