Oerlikon sells Optics business in Balzers, Liechtenstein
October 27, 2008--OC Oerlikon (Pfaffikon, Switzerland) is selling its Oerlikon Optics business unit in Balzers, Liechtenstein to the unit's management, supported by local private investors.

Optical filter maker Semrock acquired by fluidics company IDEX
October 24, 2008--Semrock, a manufacturer of optical filters for biotech and analytical instrumentation in the life sciences markets, was acquired by IDEX Corporation (Northbrook, IL), an applied solutions company specializing in fluid and metering technologies, health and science technologies, dispensing equipment, and fire, safety and other diversified products.

Luxtera joins Sun Microsystems and DARPA in intrachip communications project
October 24, 2008--Silicon CMOS photonics company Luxtera (Carlsbad, CA) signed a multi-million dollar contract with Sun Microsystems for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Ultraperformance Nanophotonic Intrachip Communications (UNIC) program. Luxtera's technology and silicon fabrication processes will be used to develop next-generation optical chip-to-chip and intra-chip interconnect technology for low-cost, enhanced-performance computer systems.

Universal Display awarded two SBIR contracts for white-OLED lighting
October 22, 2008--Universal Display Corporation (Ewing, NJ) has received two $750,000 United States Department of Energy (DOE) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contracts; work under these contracts will focus on demonstrating further advances in the performance of Universal Display's white-OLED technology toward meeting the DOE's targets for solid-state lighting.

OPTOmism call for papers: deadline is Oct. 31
October 22, 2008--OPTOmism: Photonics for the Green Revolution, is to be held by Laser Focus World (Nashua, NH) and the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA; Washington, DC) at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA, May 18-20, 2009, has announced a call for papers: deadline for abstracts is October 31, 2008.

Molecular spectroscopy company Trinean closes $4.6 million funding round
October 21, 2008--Molecular instrumentation company Trinean NV (Gentbrugge, Belgium) announced the closure of a $4.6 million dollar round of financing. The round was co-led by new investor Vesalius Biocapital and existing investor Capital-E. Trinean is a spin-off of the University of Ghent (Intec) and the Belgium nanoelectronics research center IMEC.

3M to close Precision Optics facility in Cincinnati, OH
October 21, 2008--According to local Cincinnati news stations (WCPO-TV), roughly eighty-five employees at 3M Precision Optics (Cincinnati, OH) will no longer have a job in Union Township in Clermont country come the middle of December. "At one point 3M was one of the largest employers in Clermont County," said Kathy Lehr, a spokesperson for the county.

QPC Lasers suspends operations; may file for bankruptcy protection
October 17, 2008--According to publicly available information from the Securities and Exchange Commision (SEC), laser diode manufacturer QPC Lasers (Sylmar, CA) was unsuccessful in its previously announced efforts to raise the additional funds necessary to continue operations. As a result, effective as of October 12, 2008, the Company suspended most of its operations and terminated a majority of its employees.
