Two Nobel Prize winners to speak at OPTOmism "green" photonics conference
October 17, 2008--Speakers recently confirmed for the OPTOmism Conference & Exhibition: Photonics Products for Green Technology, to be held May 18 - 20, 2009 Santa Clara, CA include Steven Chu (Nobel Prize in Physics, 1997) and Arno Penzias (Nobel Prize in Physics, 1978). The conference will cover multiple segments of the photonics industry that will deliver solutions to enable greater efficiency in a smaller carbon footprint while promoting economic growth.

Zygo to merge with ESI
October 16, 2008--Metrology company Zygo and photonic mircoengineering company Electro Scientific Industries have agreed to merge in an all-stock transaction worth $173.5 million.

October 16, 2008--Contract to develop single-frequency fiber amplifiers for the new Revolution in Fiber Lasers program by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

Fianium to lead project to develop advanced supercontinuum fiber lasers
October 15, 2008--A consortium led by ultrafast fiber-laser manufacturer Fianium (Southampton, England) is to develop and evaluate advanced white-light (supercontinuum) fiber lasers for biomedical imaging applications.

OPTOmism call for papers: deadline is Oct. 31
October 15, 2008--OPTOmism: Photonics for the Green Revolution, is to be held by Laser Focus World (Nashua, NH) and the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA; Washington, DC) at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA, May 18-20, 2009, has announced a call for papers: deadline for abstracts is October 31, 2008.

JMAR awarded contract for custom RGB lasers
October 14, 2008--JMAR Technologies (San Diego, CA), a developer of advanced laser, photonics, and detection technologies, was awarded a contract by Zebra Imaging (Austin, TX) to provide custom RGB (red/green/blue) lasers for use in a holographic imaging product currently under development.

BioSolar says economic stabilization act will benefit solar-energy industry
October 14, 2008--Biosolar (Santa Clarita, CA), developer of a technology to produce bio-based materials from renewable plant sources that reduce the cost of solar cells, says it anticipates unprecedented growth and benefits for the solar industry thanks to the recent passage of H.R. 1424, the Federal Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, which provides an eight-year extension of solar energy tax incentives to insure solar-energy industry stability.

Micron to reduce global workforce by 15% due to decreased chip demand
October 10, 2008--Semiconductor solutions provider Micron Technology is restructuring its memory operations and as a result, will reduce its global workforce by approximately 15% during the next two years. The combination of declining customer demand and product oversupply in the marketplace has driven selling prices for NAND flash memory (used in digital cameras and MP3 players) significantly below manufacturing costs, particularly for 200 mm manufacturing lines.

Microvision and Asia Optical partner in production of PicoP display engines
October 10, 2008--Microvision (Redmond, WA), a manufacturer of miniature projection display and image-capture products for mobility applications, and Asia Optical (Taichung, Taiwan), a manufacturer of electro-optical components, entered into a Supply Agreement for Asia Optical to produce products based on Microvision's proprietary PicoP technology. The first units manufactured under the agreement are expected to be completed later this year.
