Laser Focus World 2021 Rising Stars Awards: Dominik Schulten
As director of Business Development at Vixar, an ams OSRAM company, Dominik Schulten has already made a major impact on his company and the laser industry. He has received eight patents for new innovations, and is a leading developer of vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) technology, a relatively new technology that combines the high-power density and simple packaging of an infrared LED with the spectral width and speed of a laser.
Schulten was instrumental in launching the highly efficient PowerBoost multijunction 550-aperture VCSEL. This technology, which improves power conversion efficiency and enhances optical power, was a finalist in the annual Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation. He also spearheaded efforts to build 905 nm VCSEL chips to offer better solutions for automotive customers and expand the overall market for VCSEL technology.
Additionally, Schulten assisted in development of a new omnidirectional sensor that uses a VCSEL array—the groundbreaking product reduces the number of sensors required for object detection and collision avoidance in robotics, autonomous vehicles, and drone platforms.
He is lauded for his commitment to growing the VCSEL market, as well as his cooperative leadership style that leads his team to achieve their highest performance while also enjoying their work.
