Applications and market opportunities for lasers, optics, and photonics are the themes for the 27th annual Lasers & Photonics Marketplace Seminar. It will held in conjunction with SPIE Photonics West, and take place at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco on Monday, February 9.

Our Keynote Speaker, Prof. Ursula Keller from ETH Zurich, will lead off the morning sessions, talking about her view of developments in ultrafast laser technology and where these may take us. She will be followed by Allen Nogee, from PennWell’s Strategies Unlimited market intelligence group, who will describe the macroeconomic forces at work, and provide a 5-year forecast of laser revenues by product and application, including industrial lasers and applications, communications, lithography, defense and security, sensing, additive manufacturing, and medical.

Last year our afternoon Executive Panel proved to be so popular that we are bringing it back--I am grateful that Martin Seifert, president of Nufern, has again agreed to moderate a distinguished panel. It consists of Trevor Ness, senior vice president of global sales at IPG Photonics, David Allen, senior vice president and general manager at Newport’s Laser Group, and Dr. Armin Renneisen, managing director of Rofin-Sinar Laser.

Because the panel format has proved to be so informative, we will also have a morning Panel on Industrial Laser Applications, moderated by Mark Taggart, the president of Laser Mechanisms, and including three deeply experienced members of the industrial laser community representing the perspectives of laser manufacturers, job shops and system integrators, and end-users. The three, respectively, are Dr. Silke Pflueger from DirectPhotonics Industries, Dr. Ronald Schaeffer from Photomachining, and Dr. Mariana Forrest from LasAp.

In addition, Dr. Tom Hausken from the OIDA has agreed to discuss his recent research on photonics markets in different regions of the world—revealing the local drivers and forecasts for growth. Speaking of the laser markets in the single fastest growing region of the world—Prof. Qihuang Gong from Peking University will address specifics about the markets and provide data based on his position as General Secretary and Vice President of the Chinese Optical Society.

Finally, Dr. Gary Tearney at MassGeneral Hospital and Harvard Medical School will speak on some of the eye-opening applications that he and others are now developing for in-vivo imaging using a variety of photonics technologies. And not least, Chris Jones at Halliburton Technology, a world leader in oil and gas exploration and extraction, will talk to us about the applications of photonics technologies in these activities.
