A mega-update on European biophotonics
If you want to take the pulse of biophotonics in Europe, the biennial LASER World of Photonics (June 22-25, 2015) event is the place to do it. As in past years, the World of Photonics Congress 2015 includes the European Conferences on Biomedical Optics (ECBO) among its six sections. Themes for this year's edition are: advanced microscopy; clinical and biomedical spectroscopy and imaging; diffuse optical imaging; optical coherence tomography (OCT) and other coherence techniques; medical laser applications and laser-tissue interactions; optoacoustic methods and applications; novel biophotonic techniques and applications; and neurophotonics.
Among the invited ECBO talks are Kishan Dholakia of the University of St. Andrews (St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland) on accelerating progress in biomedical imaging, and Hatice Altug of École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL; Switzerland) on mid-IR plasmonics for time-resolved and ultra-sensitive vibrational biospectroscopy.
The Congress spreads from lecture halls to the exhibit halls with its "practice-oriented application" sessions, divided into four categories—one of which is dedicated to life sciences.
