Rad-icon Imaging (Santa Clara, CA) introduces the Shad-o-Box 1024 Hi-Res x-ray sensitive imaging camera for scientific applications such as x-ray microscopy and spectroscopy where the signal levels are quite low. This high-resolution, compact, stand-alone camera features a 14-bit output and parallel digital interface (LVDS) for direct input to a digital frame grabber. Total power dissipation is less than 6 W.

The large 49.2 mm by 49.2 mm sensing area consists of a 1024 by 1024 pixel CMOS photodiode array imager with pixels on 48 µm centers. The large active area is obtained without the need for an optical interface, resulting in a compact, rugged, cost-effective solution to digital x-ray image capture. A Gd2O2S scintillator screen placed in direct contact with the photodiode array converts incident x-rays or energetic particles to visible light, which in turn is detected by the photodiode imager. Two specific Shad-o-Box 1024 models cover the energy range from 10 kV to 160 kV – the standard model for low energy x-rays, between 10-50 kV, and an extended energy range model for energies between 10-160 kV.
