Single-cell profiling reveals that obesity is linked to insulin, not genetics

APRIL 15, 2009--Genetically identical cells store widely differing amounts of fat depending on subtle variations in how cells process insulin. That discovery, made by researchers at Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN), was enabled by a combination of imaging techniques including coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy, in addition to flow cytometry, and fluorescence microscopy.
