Thanks to his work in optical coherence tomography (OCT) for ophthalmic imaging, Dr. David Huang of the Oregon Health and Science University Casey Eye Institute (Portland, OR) will receive the 2013 Friedenwald Award from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). Huang helped to pioneer OCT, recognizing that cross-sectional images could be generated and displayed in false color by scanning the laser measurement beam. Since then, OCT has emerged as a standard diagnostic in clinical ophthalmology and is used for the diagnosis and monitoring glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The Friedenwald Award was established in 1957 as a memorial to Dr. Jonas S. Friedenwald, a distinguished researcher whose contributions encompassed the entire field of ophthalmic investigations. The Friedenwald and Proctor Awards are presented annually by ARVO to recognize outstanding research in the basic or clinical sciences as applied to ophthalmology.

The award will be presented to Huang at the 2013 ARVO Annual Meeting, to take place May 5–9, 2013, in Seattle, WA.
