August 29, 2008 -- The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA, Des Plaines, IL) says it is now applications for its 2009 research award program.
The annual program offers two-year, $80,000 Basic Research Fellowships; and one-year, $75,000 Translational Grants to exceptional young brain tumor researchers in the United States and Canada.
"Many of today's most prominent brain tumor researchers and specialists received ABTA support early in their careers," said ABTA Executive Director Elizabeth M. Wilson. "We are funding the future, and hopefully, an ultimate cure for brain tumors."
The Basic Research Fellowships provide salary support to post-doctorate scientists conducting basic brain tumor research. Medical doctors (M.D.s) within two years of completing a residency or within five years of post- residency training, and Ph.D. researchers with no more than five years post- doctoral laboratory experience, are eligible for a Basic Research Fellowship.
Translational Grants fund pre-clinical, non-human brain tumor research beyond the molecular level. Qualified candidates are M.D.s within five years of post-residency training who have attained junior faculty to assistant professor status, and Ph.D.s with three-to-five years of post-doctoral laboratory experience.
Last year, ABTA awarded $1.8 million to Basic Research Fellows, and $350,000 to Translational Grant recipients. Since 1997, ABTA has awarded more than $12 million to young brain tumor researchers.
The deadline for completed applications, including all attachments, is January 7, 2009.
