89 North biomedical imaging light engine nabs coveted environmental award
The Heliophor pumped phosphor light engine for biomedical imaging applications from 89 North (Burlington, VT) has been selected to receive the 2011 Vermont Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. A mercury-free, solid-state light engine, Heliophor serves as a replacement for mercury arc lamps currently used in biomedical imaging, and helps to reduce the formation of significant amounts of mercury waste that can enter the environment and damage the ecosystem.
Established in 1993, the Vermont Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence recognizes the actions taken by Vermont residents and businesses to conserve and protect natural resources, prevent pollution, and promote environmental sustainability. More than 150 award-winning efforts of Vermont individuals, organizations, institutions, public agencies, and businesses have been recognized with this award to date. These projects contribute significantly to protecting the environment, conserving energy and reducing the production of greenhouse gases. Together, they have created a green and sustainable business culture, and advanced environmental education on all fronts.
“We are honored to have been selected to receive this award,” says 89 North’s General Manager, Chris Baumann. “For the past 20 years our parent company, Chroma Technology Corp, has been highly respected for both their socially and environmentally sound policies. They are an excellent reminder to every business out there that you don’t have to choose between being a successful company and doing the right thing when it comes to the environment. You can do both. We are proud to follow in that tradition.”
