A compact proximity-type microchannel-plate photomultiplier tube has a 1-ns gate risetime and 5-ns gate width. The R5916U detector is useful for satellite laser ranging, lidar, and fluorescence decay analysis. The spectral response ranges from 160 to 850 nm, and the photocathode effective area is 10 mm in diameter.
