January 11, 2008, Jena, Germany--The Jenoptik Group has acquired all the shares in Epigap Optoelektronik GmbH. Berlin-based Epigap possesses comprehensive technology and process know-how in all aspects of the manufacture of selective photo diodes and light-emitting diode (LED) semiconductor chips for optoelectronic components.

As of December 31, 2007, Jenoptik purchased 100% of the shares in Epigap Optoelektronik GmbH, strengthening its Optical Systems division. The outstanding feature of Epigap's photodiodes is their very high temperature stability. They can be designed with great precision for specific light wavelengths (high spectral selectivity). These properties are achieved thanks to specialized materials and process know-how in wafer and chip manufacture, enabling Epigap to manufacture custom-designed photodiodes. The diodes are primarily used in the automotive industry, medical technology, defense, and security industry as well as lighting technology. Epigap was founded in 1995 and employs just under 50 personnel.

The acquisition complements Jenoptik Polymer Systems based in Triptis (Thuringia) (Optical Systems division), one of the leading providers of polymer optics and optoelectronic systems. In this field Jenoptik possesses expertise in the manufacture not only of plastic optics but also increasingly complex optoelectronic modules and systems. To this end the Group had recently invested heavily in assembly and packaging technology in order to expand the existing process chain by adding an important technology stage. Jenoptik supplies plastic optics, modules and systems to leading manufacturers in the medical technology, sensor systems, automotive and lighting industries.
