Ken Werner of Display Central writes:

… Lukas Alpert reported in the Wall Street Journal that the Russian company Yota Devices is developing a high-end smart phone that will incorporate a flexible monochrome E Ink display in addition to a conventional color LCD on the opposite side of the phone.

Yota CEO Vladislav Martynov said that 35 engineers with a $25 million budget have been working on the phone since May. Martynov plans to introduce the phone in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Yota plans to begin selling the phone in Russia in Q3 2013, and internationally with mobile operators in early 2014. Manufacturing will be done by top-tier manufacturing partners in Asia, Martynov said. Yota Devices parent is a large company that develops 4G networks and sells modems and wireless routers in Russia, so its connections should help with domestic sales.

The phone runs Android Jelly Bean, and rides on a Qualcomm 8960 platform. Both displays are 4.3 inches on the diagonal. E Ink CMO Sri Peruvemba told Display Daily that the E Ink display has 640×360 pixels. The main camera will have a 12-megapixel sensor, which sounds like a recipe for very noisy images. A curved cover glass from Corning is designed to encourage users to place the phone on a desk or table with the E Ink display up.
