X6D Limited (Ljubljana, Slovenia and Los Angeles, CA) has introduced active-shutter liquid-crystal-display (LCD)-based viewing glasses that communicate via wireless Bluetooth with high-definition 3D televisions. The glasses are transformed from opaque to transparent in synchronization with the images displayed on the television, delivering the full frame-rate capability of the TV from information encoded on conventional DVD and Blu-ray players, as well as from emerging distribution channels such as streaming media, pay-per-view, video on demand, and HDTV 3D broadcasts.

The active-shutter glasses are built from liquid-crystal material that becomes dark when voltage is applied but is otherwise transparent. The glasses alternately darken over one eye and then the other in synchronization with the refresh rate of the screen, while the display alternately shows different perspectives for each eye. The glasses use patented liquid-crystal technology that allows them to operate up to 480 Hz with no crosstalk and a large viewing angle. For cinema viewing, the glasses operate at 144 frames per second (fps), while at-home viewing operation is at 120 fps due to the speed limitation of television. Currently, the glasses operate in more than 2000 cinemas worldwide. Contact Ami Dror at [email protected].
