    CO2 lasers are progressing from an average-power value proposition to an application-specific marketplace.
    FIGURE 1. A miniature 3-lb CO2 laser with 400-mW output power is activated with the click of a trigger switch. A built-in rechargeable battery pack allows it to operate continuously at full output power for more than one hour per charge. An additional pound can be shaved from this laser by making certain engineering tradeoffs.
    Compact CO2 lasers with a stable and tunable wavelength open up many new applications, spectroscopic and otherwise. Hand-held CO2 laser-based devices are now practical.
