Photron acquires photonic-crystal designer Photonic Lattice

Dec. 3, 2020
The two companies, which have been in a joint development relationship for more than 10 years, have the goal of developing new products to expand into the global market in the fields of photonic and semiconductor manufacturing.

High-speed imaging technology specialist Photron (Tokyo, Japan) has acquired Photonic Lattice (Sendai, Japan), a pioneer in photonic-crystal technology widely employed in optical telecommunications and polarization imaging.

Originating out of Tohoku University (also in Sendai), Photonic Lattice is a developer of technology for designing and depositing fine laminated patterns of photonic crystals. They have been commercializing polarization-measuring equipment using photonic crystals based on their established manufacturing technology for optical elements for more than 20.

The two companies have been in a joint development relationship for more than 10 years and have drawn on their respective expertise to develop the high-speed 2D polarization CRYSTA camera and the KAMAKIRI birefringence mapping measuring device.

With this acquisition, Photron hopes to not only shorten the development time and improve the production quality by building a business relation that integrates the development, sales, manufacturing, and management of both Photron and Photonic Lattice, but also aims to develop new products to expand into the global market in the fields of photonic and semiconductor manufacturing.
