The Coherent Corp. Board of Directors is conducting a comprehensive executive search for a new CEO to take the reins from CEO Dr. Vincent (“Chuck”) D. Mattera, who plans to retire.
Mattera has been the company CEO for the last eight years of his 20-year tenure, during which annual revenue grew from $150 million in fiscal 2004 to more than $5 billion in fiscal 2023.
In 2022, Dr. Mattera led the transformation of II-VI, a supplier of engineered materials and optoelectronic components, into Coherent Corp., creating a global, diversified materials, networking, and lasers company serving the industrial, communications, electronics, and instrumentation markets.
“Since the strategic combination of II-VI and Coherent two years ago, I am most proud of the tremendous progress we have made to integrate our two organizations, optimize synergies, and place the Company in an advantaged position for accelerated growth,” Mattera said. “With Coherent on a clear path to improved margins and continued profitable growth, its track record of product leadership, customer intimacy, operational excellence, and the unstoppable imagination of our world-class people, I believe that now is the right time to look toward the next chapter of the Company’s transformation.”
Earlier in his career, Mattera led II-VI Incorporated through a successful strategic redirection, successfully shifting it to become a vertically integrated supplier of semiconductor and photonics components. He shared the strategic steps that led to the change, including a chain of targeted acquisitions between 2010 and 2019, at Laser Focus World’s 2021 Laser & Photonics Marketplace Seminar.
Mattera joined II-VI as vice president in 2004, then served as the company’s executive vice president from 2010 to 2013, and chief operating officer from 2013 to 2014, when he became president and chief executive officer.
Lead Independent Director Enrico DiGirolamo recognized Mattera’s role in leading the development and execution of Coherent’s strategic growth plans. “As CEO since 2016, Chuck has driven an over 700% increase in the Company’s market capitalization, to over $9 billion, and the Board and I can’t thank him enough for his outstanding contributions and stalwart leadership over the last 20 years.
