NKT Photonics licenses photonic-crystal fiber technology portions

Dec. 14, 2011
Birkerød, Denmark--NKT Photonics has licensed parts of its photonic-crystal fiber (PCF) technology to GLOphotonics, a company that produces gas-filled hollow-core PCFs and photonic microcells (PMCs).

Birkerød, Denmark--NKT Photonics has licensed parts of its photonic-crystal fiber (PCF) technology to GLOphotonics (Limoges, France), a company that produces gas-filled hollow-core PCFs and photonic microcells (PMCs).

Originally developed by researchers at the University of Bath (Bath, England) and the Technical University of Denmark (Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark), NKT Photonics has pioneered the field of PCFs for more than a decade. Today the technology forms the backbone of products such as supercontinuum lasers, high-power pulsed fiber lasers, and fiber gyros, and constantly enables new ideas and innovations.

NKT Photonics CEO Jakob Skov explains that because PCF technology can be taken in many different directions, the company wants to make sure that others can benefit from the technology and their innovative ideas by licensing the company's technology.

David Richards, CEO of GLOphotonics, notes that with the licensing agreement, the company plans to bring a new, highly disruptive product into the photonics market.
