Hauppauge, NY, April, 9, 2003. Sagitta announced that Applied Fiber Telecommunications, Albany, GA, has ordered a Gemini-Cx machine to enable high-yield, consistent manufacturing of fiber optic connectors. The system was shipped directly from this year's OFC show in Atlanta, marking the urgency for value-add manufacturing in the challenging environment of high-mix/low-volume production.

Sagitta's Gemini-Cx, an automated platform that combines high-end polishing, cleaning and inspection on a single tool, offers the requisite production controls to maintain tight tolerances in connector production.

The system was chosen to eliminate the cost and efficiency bottlenecks posed by manual polishing, cleaning and visual inspection; and is being implemented to process a wide range of single- and multi-mode, single- and multi-fiber connectors. The system's configuration includes five polishing stations with automatic abrasive changing, high- and standard-volume fixturing, three integrated cleaning station to avoid cross-contamination, and automatic end-face visual inspection to reduce operator-driven yield variations.

"We are happy to provide Applied Fiber the Gemini-Cx and to enable the competitive edge needed to win out in the connector manufacturing arena," said Amir Chitayat, President and CEO of Sagitta. "By improving yields, reducing consumable costs and enhancing the overall efficiency of the polishing-cleaning-inspection production cell, the Gemini-Cx is poised to introduce long needed manufacturing standards to the fiber optics market".

John T. Philips III, President and CEO of Applied Fiber, commented, "We were looking to implement our strategy of delivering consistently reliable products by, among others, establishing a controlled and standardized manufacturing process. We found the Gemini-Cx to be the only product that can guarantee such performance, and we needed its unique flexibility in handling the challenges of today's high-mix production environment. With the system's repeatable processes and cost-efficient production, Applied Fiber is ready to provide the fast turn-around our customers require, without compromising product pricing and maintaining the quality of deliverables."
