SEPTEMBER 16, 2008 -- The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) has chosen Prosurgics' (High Wycombe, U.K.) FreeHand robotic camera holder as an Innovation of the Year. SLS recognizes innovative products that have multidisciplinary application in minimally invasive surgery each year. The Society's 2008 Innovations of the Year are being announced at the 17th SLS Annual Meeting in Chicago tomorrow, September 17 2008. FreeHand, launched in Europe in June 2008, is the first of Prosurgics' new-generation of affordable robotics, which aims to bring clear visualization and direct camera control to every laparoscopic surgical unit.

For the moment FreeHand is limited to investigational use in the U.S. because it is awaiting FDA clearance. Prosurgics just recently established its U.S. operation in Cupertino, CA. Bill Perry, president of the newly formed U.S. organization says that the product solves problems experienced by every laparoscopic surgeon, including poor visualization and variable levels of surgical procedure assistance. "We expect FreeHand to become an everyday necessity in operating rooms across the world in the coming year," he says.

Prosurgics is focused on developing affordable surgical robots. The company also has an office in Berlin, Germany -- and a global network of distributors.
