Home Skinovations Ltd.'s (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) Silk'n is a laser light-based hair-removal system designed for home use, and is available in the US. The "safe, simple and easy-to-use" handheld device promises all the clinical benefits of pulsed light for hair removal at home.

According to Home Skinovations, the system was tested by top dermatologists, plastic surgeons and cosmetic physicians in a year-long clinical trial and achieved results comparable to in-office, professional treatments safely and with minimal discomfort compared to waxing or professional laser treatments.

Silk'n treatments can take as little as 5 minutes for an underarm or 30 minutes for a leg. They are intended to be spaced every two weeks for the first few sessions and then as-needed until desired results are achieved. Maintenance treatments can be undertaken whenever there is evidence of hair re-growth.

Designed with safety as a paramount consideration, the system is able to generate a light pulse only when the applicator tip is placed firmly on the treatment area. This eliminates the possibility of an accidental flash in the direction of the user's eyes, the company says; eye protection is not necessary.

Because it is the melanin pigment in hair that absorbs the light energy, darker hair will get better results. Silk'n is best used on lighter skin types as well, and should not be used by people with black or brown skin.

Silk'n is priced at $800 and is available through selected physician and med spa outlets.
