Jupiter, FL--Jenoptik Defense Inc. is set to develop an observation and target acquisition system to the specific requirements of the United States Marine Corps (USMC)—a contract valued at $1.3 million.

The observation and target acquisition system with day and night capability will be developed to fulfill a critical need of the US armed forces—the Common Laser Range Finder Integrated Capability (CLRF IC). The CLRF IC needs to integrate several elements of currently fielded equipment, be combined into a single lightweight system, and replace multiple pieces of equipment by a single device. Three other companies have also been chosen to compete in developing a CLRF IC for the USMC; Jenoptik's goal is to design a system for the USMC over a 19-month period of development and testing.

The baseline for this most recent development contract is the company's optronic reconnaissance system NYXUS BIRD, which launched in the summer of 2012, already combining many of the required parameters. The NYXUS BIRD is a 1.5 kg multifunctional day and night observation device that combines the company's traditional glass optics, a thermal imaging device, a rangefinder, a global positioning system (GPS), and a digital compass. In addition to a direct view channel with 7X magnification, an infrared (IR) channel is available for nighttime observation.
