Continuing its growth, JDS Uniphase (San Jose, CA) has acquired Ramar Corp. (Northborough, MA), a small company that makes integrated optical components based on lithium niobate. Terms of the acquisition of Ramar, a private company with 14 employees, were not disclosed. The purchase strengthens JDS Uniphase's position in the market for lithium niobate modulator components for telecommunications.

"We expect the Ramar acquisition to add significant technical capabilities to our 10- and 40-Gbit/s lithium niobate modulator-product-development activities," said Paul Suchoski, vice president and general manager of the JDS Uniphase Bloomfield operations. "Through this acquisition, we believe we can accelerate and broaden our product introductions in these key markets."
