Photonics Hot List: July 19, 2024

July 19, 2024
In this episode: agricultural waste and solar cells make hydrogen gas, a laser creates programmable qubits, and a silicon chip detects toxins in water.

In this episode of Photonics Hot List:

In efforts to help boost clean energy sources, a team of engineers and scientists is bypassing conventional approaches that require high levels of electricity, and instead turning to solar power and common agricultural waste.

A femtosecond laser-based technique for creating programmable optical qubits, which builds on existing computing infrastructure, could help researchers make fully functional, scalable quantum networks a reality.

A highly scalable silicon photonic chip, developed by an international team of researchers, can more accurately detect and measure lead concentrations in water. The technology could aid efforts to clean up water pollution worldwide.
