In this episode: a new approach boosts neuromorphic computing, light and oxygen could aid plastics recycling, and quantum scientists trigger light-molecule interaction.

In this episode of Photonics Hot List:

As machine learning and AI systems become increasingly widespread, neural networks must expand, which means higher energy consumption and networks that are more complex. But researchers in Germany are seeking alternatives via neuromorphic computing and artificial neural networks.

Unnatural and unsaturated polymers, including plastics and rubber, are everywhere. And while recycling efforts continue, existing systems for breaking down such polymers often rely on unnatural methods. Now, researchers are working to make the process more environmentally friendly and more effective.

An international team of scientists has found a way to explore and harness the unique properties of strongly coupled quantum states with sugar-coated THz metasurfaces that are robust and efficient enough to hybridize molecules with THz light.
