Photonics Hot List: August 23, 2024

Aug. 23, 2024
In this episode: a microlaser monitors biomarkers in sweat, NASA makes a quantum sensing breakthrough, and OPLEDs could be the future of high-end displays.

The struggle with diabetes and the vital processes required to manage it could soon become easier and more accurate, thanks to the development of a wearable microlaser device that can noninvasively measure and monitor biomarkers in the body through sweat.

Scientists from NASA’s Cold Atom Lab have achieved a significant milestone in quantum sensing in its ability to measure subtle vibrations of the International Space Station and its surrounding environment. This is the first time ultracold atoms have been used to detect environmental changes in space.

With ongoing advances in laser display technologies comes the need for more colorful, higher-definition components than existing organic LEDs can offer. Now, researchers in China are working to address these evolving requirements with organic polariton LEDs.
